Removing fluoride from water requires specialized filtration systems, as it is a difficult contaminant to eliminate with standard filters. The term "water meter" refers to a device that measures water usage, not a purification system. You must install a dedicated filtration unit at the point of use or entry to your home to effectively remove fluoride.

Effective methods for removing fluoride

Reverse Osmosis (RO)

How it works: An RO system uses pressure to force water through a semi-permeable membrane. The membrane has tiny pores that trap fluoride ions and other contaminants, allowing only purified water to pass through.

Effectiveness: This is one of the most reliable and effective methods, capable of removing 87–92% of fluoride. High-quality, certified systems can remove even more.

Considerations: RO systems often remove healthy minerals as well, though some models include a remineralization stage. They also produce wastewater and require more space and installation than simple filters.

Activated alumina filters

How it works: Activated alumina is a porous form of aluminum oxide that adsorbs fluoride and other contaminants as water passes through its granules.

Effectiveness: These filters can remove up to 90% of fluoride. Their effectiveness is highly dependent on the water's pH, working best in a slightly acidic range between 5 and 6.

Considerations: The filtration medium needs regular replacement or regeneration to maintain its effectiveness.

Water distillation

How it works: Water is heated to create steam, which is then collected and condensed back into liquid form. Because fluoride does not vaporize, it is left behind in the boiling chamber.

Effectiveness: This method can remove nearly 100% of fluoride and other contaminants.

Considerations: Distillers are slow, energy-intensive, and typically only produce small batches of purified water at a time.

Bone char carbon filters

How it works: Not to be confused with standard activated carbon, bone char is a specialized carbon filter made from heated animal bones. It effectively captures or alters contaminants like fluoride through adsorption.

Effectiveness: This method can remove over 95% of fluoride.

Considerations: Some people may object to using a filter made from animal products.

Electrocoagulation

How it works: An electrical current is passed through metal electrodes (often aluminum) submerged in the water. This causes the release of metal ions that react with and bind to fluoride ions, forming solid particles (flocs) that can be removed through settling and filtration.

Effectiveness: This method is highly effective and can be used for both large and small-scale water treatment.

Considerations: Requires a power source and can have drawbacks such as the potential for electrode corrosion.

Common filters that do not remove fluoride

Standard activated carbon filters: Typical carbon filters, such as those found in pitchers (e.g., Brita) and refrigerator dispensers, are not designed to remove fluoride.

Boiling water: Boiling water does not remove fluoride. In fact, by concentrating the water, it can actually increase the concentration of fluoride.
